WOMEN OF HISTORY | ANACAONA, THE GOLDEN FLOWER (1474 – c. 1503) (Tinsel Korey)
Anacaona was a cacica (chief) of one of the five Taino tribes in Hispaniola when the Spaniards settled there. Elements of matrilineal descent in the Taíno society strengthened Anacaona’s position, and she and her brother acted as equal negotiators when Columbus first arrived and arranged for supplies. The atmosphere between the Taino and Spanish on this occasion was said to be cordial, but it didn’t last. After being horribly mistreated by the Spanish, the Taino people revolted against the invaders and began a long war against them. During this time Anacaona attempted to remain an emissary between her own people and the Spaniards, paying them tribute but keeping her own tribe out of chains.
During a feast organised by eighty-four regional chiefs in to honour Anacaona, the Spanish ordered the building set on fire, those inside massacred, and arrested Anacaona and her noblemen. They were accused of conspiracy and put to death, Anacaona only twenty-nine.
She is considered now to be one of the most significant figures in early Haitian history and for that reason is seen as something of a founder for the country. As well as the many things that have been written about her, Anacaona herself was a celebrate composer of ballads and poetry.
